# Packages

The package object and the allowed CRUD operations on the related resource endpoint

A package represents a physical box or pack — with predefined dimensions — that products get shipped in. Each [stock location](/core-api-reference/2026-05/stock_locations.md) can define its own set of packages, letting you model the different box sizes actually available there (e.g. small, medium, large).

## Dimensions and shipping rates

A package's `length`, `width`, and `height` — together with the `unit_of_length` (`cm` or `in`) — are required at creation time. [Shipping carriers](/core-api-reference/2026-05/carrier_accounts.md) use these dimensions to calculate shipping rates for the [parcels](/core-api-reference/2026-05/parcels.md) packed into them, so getting them right directly affects the rates your customers are quoted at checkout.

## Packages and parcels

When a [shipment](/core-api-reference/2026-05/shipments.md) is split into one or more parcels, each parcel is delivered in a package. A package's size is also surfaced in the `instructions` attribute of an [EasyPost pickup](/core-api-reference/2026-05/easypost_pickups.md), alongside the number of parcels associated with the shipment.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.commercelayer.io/core-api-reference/2026-05/packages.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
